What Is HDTV?

HDTV describes a high definition TV picture that offers a quality of picture about four times better than the one you will currently receive. HDTV pictures are broadcast at a widescreen ratio of 16:9 and take up many more active rows than a Standard Definition TV (SDTV) picture.

TVs in Europe that are capable are displaying HDTV have the "HD Ready" logo on them. This means that they have a minimum of 720 horizontal lines in their display, and possibly 1080 horizontal lines.

HDTV in the UK is broadcast digitally but is only available through Digital Satellite and Cable - not through Freeview at the moment, although this might change following the Analogue Switch-off.
